At the 2011 E3 convention, Sony announced the newest piece of PlayStation technology that will alter the gaming world (no, we’re not talking about the PS Vita).

We’re talking about the PlayStation 3D Monitor.

Now, don’t think it’s going to be some corny new addition to 3D. This monitor features technology that no other gaming set offers: a twist on split screening.

Since the players must wear glasses to view the 3D, Sony used their patented software from years ago to make dual images that covers the entire screen. Through the glasses, the images are split, so that one player sees one image, and the other sees an entirely different image.

That’s right! Split screeners can now have a full-screen without buying a separate TV and console (yeah, it’s cool for a while, but then it just takes space—and it’s costly). Sony hasn’t revealed if it will only be compatible with new 3D games, or with all games, or even with other consoles, since it uses HDMI hookups to connect to a console (which would make it viable for Xbox; but we don’t know if the technology will work for both).

Sony has tons of experience with televisions, and their VAIO 3D branded laptops have excellent 3D viewing, since it uses VA LCD panel. It almost guarantees that the 3D PS Monitor will be awesome.

At E3, Sony said that the PS 3D Monitor will be released later this year. The monitor itself is $370 without glasses, and is 24 inches. Sony is offering it in a bundle, though, with a pair of 3D glasses, Uncharted 3, HDMI, and the 24-inch display, for $499.
